How Voddit works
Voddit is a place to share ideas for your state or the whole country and find out which ones people actually want. Every state and the District of Columbia has its own board, and the USA board is for nationwide ideas.
Voting
Upvote ideas you'd like to see happen. Downvote ideas you think would make things worse. Click an arrow again to take your vote back. Your votes are private: people see an idea's total score, not who voted.
Boards are sorted by Hot by default, which balances score with freshness so new ideas get a fair shot. You can also sort by New or Top.
Posting
To post, upvote 5 ideas first, on any board. After that, posting is unlocked for good. Taking part before you post keeps the boards for people who care about them, and makes spam and bot posting much harder.
One human, one account
When you sign up you confirm: “I am a human and this will be my only account.” Bots and duplicate accounts distort the votes, so they aren't allowed.
Post length limits
We set our limits by looking at how similar sites handle it:
| Site | Title | Text |
|---|---|---|
| Hacker News | 80 characters | — |
| We the People (White House petitions) | 120 | 800 |
| Stack Overflow | 150 | 30,000 |
| Lemmy | 200 | 10,000 |
| 300 | 40,000 | |
| Voddit | 10–150 | up to 10,000 |
Titles of 150 characters leave room for a specific idea without the run-on headlines that feeds cut off anyway. 10,000 characters is about 1,500 words. That's plenty to explain a problem and a solution, and much more than the 800 characters that petition writers found too short for complex issues.
Each idea can also have one link (up to 2,000 characters) and up to 4 photos of up to 10 MB each. We re-save every photo, which strips location data and other hidden metadata.
Moderation
Anyone with an account can report an idea that breaks the Content Policy. Moderators review reports, remove ideas that break the rules, and suspend accounts that keep doing it.
Who runs Voddit?
Voddit is an independent community site. It isn't run by, or affiliated with, any state or federal government, and no one is obliged to act on an idea because it's popular here. It's a way to show what people want.
